About Sir Jack Petchey CBE 1925-2024

Sir Jack Petchey set up the Jack Petchey Foundation to inspire young people across London and Essex to work hard and reach their full potential.

Sir Jack was an incredible inspiration to everyone who works at the Foundation. Even at 98 he took an active interest in the running of the charity, as do the rest of his family who share his vision.

He was born into a working class family in the East End on 19th July 1925, left school at 13 and then joined the Navy in 1943. After leaving the Navy, he began working as a clerk for a solicitor’s firm. He applied for management training but was told he would never make a businessman.

Instead of giving up, Sir Jack used his £60 life savings, which included the gratuity pay from the Navy, to buy a second hand car and started a taxi business. Through hard work and innovative thinking, he proved them wrong and built a multi-million-pound empire.

Sir Jack’s experiences led to his passion to increase young peoples’ aspirations by rewarding their achievements.

In 2016, Sir Jack received his knighthood in recognition of his many years of charitable work.

He died on 27th June 2024, aged 98 – or as he would say, almost 99!

Jack Petchey Foundation at ADO

ADO have been part of the Jack Petchey Foundation Scheme since 2017. Being part of the scheme enables multiple learners to be recognised for their hard efforts, every year. The students are able to vote for one another, which helps them to understand the importance of the Fundamental British Values.

A student may get an award for:

♦ Helping others ♦ Being a good role model ♦ Coping with adversity ♦ Giving support to those within the ADO community ♦ Just doing their best and trying really hard.

Awards

Jack Petchey Achievement Award WinnerEach young achiever is awarded a medallion, and certificate that is recognised as a positive part of any progress file or young CV! Plus they get a £250 grant to spend to benefit other young people at ADO.

We ensure that every winner plays a main role when exploring expenditure options. We allow them to read, research, and cost up different ideas which links in to our curriculum. When a student wins a Jack Petchey Award, their names are then added in to our online ‘Roll of Honour’ for them to always look back on, being proud of what they have achieved and encouraging others to do the same.

A Who's Who of Award Winners can be found on the Roll of Honour - HERE>

A Big Thanks

ADO would like to thank the JP Foundation for their continued support of our children and young people. They have achieved so much through the support of the foundation which has ultimately helped them reach their goals whilst learning with us. Thanks JP!!
